How to build a tea hamper

By Colin Preston, founder of Wild SteepUpdated 5 min read

A good tea hamper needs five things: one tea they'll actually drink, a way to brew it, and three treats that suit how they like to relax. Pick the tea first and let it set the mood for the rest. Our build-your-own hamper does exactly this for £56, with a hand-written plantable card and free UK delivery.

We started building hampers this way after watching people at the market stall. They'd pick a tea for someone, then stand there wondering what goes with it. Five pieces is enough to feel generous without filling the box with padding.

Build your hamper — £56

Step 1: Pick the tea

Start with the person, not the tea. Three questions narrow it down fast:

  1. Do they drink caffeine in the evening? If not, go caffeine free: rooibos, honeybush or herbal.
  2. Do they take milk? Milk drinkers suit a malty black tea like Russian Caravan or Kenilworth Black.
  3. Sweet, fruity, spiced or floral? Match it to the biscuits or candle they already like.

A gift tube looks the most finished in a hamper. Mulled and Gingerbread make it a Christmas hamper without trying.

Step 2: Add a way to brew it

Loose leaf needs something to hold the leaves. A heart-shaped infuser looks best in the box; cotton muslin brew bags are easiest for someone new to loose leaf. Neither needs a teapot.

Step 3: Choose three treats

Mix types rather than tripling up. One to eat, one to light and one for later works for almost anyone.

Biscuits

Apple Crumble, Cherry Bakewell, Pumpkin Spice, Sticky Toffee Pudding and Tiramisu shortbread; Ginger Thins

Marshmallows

Jammie Dodger, Honeycomb & Choc, Cinnamon Churro

Fudge

Cherry and Raspberry Dream slabs (vegan), Rocky Road, Traditional Butter

Cake

Tiffin square, Cherry Almond Brownie square

Candles

Apple Crumble, Cinnamon Bun, Pumpkin Spice

Bath and soap

Botanical Bath Soak Collection; three handmade soaps

Step 4: Add a card

Pick a plantable Christmas card and we'll write your message by hand. If it's going straight to them, choose "send to them" and we'll write the names inside.

Building one yourself at home?

Three things keep a homemade tea hamper looking right and tasting right:

  • Keep tea away from strong scents. Loose leaf picks up smells. Keep it in its sealed pouch or tube, and don't pack it touching an unwrapped candle or soap.
  • Fill the box. Use paper shred so nothing moves; a half-empty box looks smaller than it is.
  • Put the tea in the middle at the front. It's the reason for the hamper, so it's the first thing they should see.

Tea hamper questions

One tea, one way to brew it and three treats: something to eat, something to light and something for later. Five pieces feels generous without padding.

Our build-your-own hamper is £56 for five pieces plus a hand-written plantable card, with free UK delivery. The ready-made Fireside Hamper is £64 for six pieces.

Build it around a caffeine-free blend such as Staying In, Gentle Dream, Mulled or Berry Compote, then add biscuits, a candle or a bath soak.

Yes. Choose "send to them" when you add the card, and we'll write the names inside by hand.
